ORIF thoracic cage

Case contributed by Dr Ian Bickle

Admitted with shortness of breath and fever. Prior chest trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Male

Extensive ORIF of the lower left thoracic cage.  Other left sided rib fractures are evident. Heart size normal. Lungs clear.

Case Discussion

This is a relatively uncommon chest x-ray finding of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) performed on the thoracic cage.

This is typically performed following severe trauma with an unstable, perhaps flail, chest.
