Presentation
Left shoulder pain.
Patient Data
An os acromiale is seen appearing as a low signal line that traverses the distal acromion associated with fibrous synchondrosis.
Case Discussion
Os acromiale is an anatomical variant representing an unfused accessory center of ossification of the acromion of the scapula. In most cases, it is asymptomatic and discovered as an incidental finding and can be bilateral in 60% of cases.
An os acromiale is easily identified if you put in mind to examine the acromion in the superior axial plane as it can easily be mistaken for the typical acromioclavicular joint or a fracture, especially in trauma cases.
