Osteoarthritis of the knee

Case contributed by Dr Bruno Di Muzio

Right knee chronic pain with functional limitation. Previous history of being a professional football player when younger.

Patient Data

Age: 54
Gender: Male

CT Right knee

There are narrowing of the medial compartment of the tibiofemoral and of the patellofemoral compartment, prominent subchondral sclerosis and prominent osteophyte formation. Similar findings are also noted in the articulation between the tibia and proximal fibula.

Case Discussion

This patient has radiographs showing less marked degenerative changes on the left knee.

Osteoarthritis of the knee is known to be a common cause of morbidity in the older population. This case shows also prominent patellofemoral osteophytes, which are more associated with pain.
