Long stemmed hinged total knee replacement with an external tibial stem. No periprosthetic lucency to suggest infection or loosening.

Case Discussion

Osseointegrated implants are used in the knee following below-knee amputation if the patient can not tolerate a socket. This prosthesis allows an artificial limb to be attached to the external tibial stem.

Osseointegration was initially developed in dental surgery and now the principles are being applied in orthopedics.

Obviously, with metal in direct contact with both the outside environment and bone, there is a risk of infection.
