Osteoma - skull vault

Case contributed by Dr Ganesh Sanap

Painless swelling on left side of scalp.

Patient Data

Age: 15-year-old
Gender: Male

A well defined hyerdense bony lesion 1.5 x 1.2 cm in size in outer table of left parietal bone near the coronal suture without surrounding soft tissue.

Case Discussion

Osteomas should be distinguished from osteochondromas, which has a cartilaginous (lucent) area and occasional speckled foci of calcified cartilage matrix.

Osteochondromas may have marrow contained within the stalk which is continuous with the marrow cavity of the parent bone. Osteomas do not have a marrow cavity.
