Osteomalacia (Looser zones)

Presentation

Right thigh pain.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

Osteopenic changes involving bony pelvis and proximal femurs. Multiple pseudofractures/Looser zones are seen involving superior and inferior pubic rami bilaterally. There is also a transcervical fracture on right side.

Case Discussion

Pseudofractures or Looser zones are seen in osteomalacia. Common sites affected include the scapula, pubic rami and proximal femurs medially. In late stages the shape of pelvis also becomes deformed giving the characteristic triradiate pelvis.
