Osteomyelitis (4th metatarsal bone)

Direct trauma to foot dorsum - 1 month prior. Presents with local pain and swelling. Referred for ultrasound of foot swelling.

Patient Data

Age: about 1.5 - 2 yrs
Gender: Female

Erosion of 4th metatarsal dorsal cortex is noted with adjacent soft tissue swelling and hypervascularity.

No mobile echoes are noted.

The dorsal cortices of the 3rd and 5th metatarsal bones are intact.

Case Discussion

Findings suggest 4th metarsal osteomyelitis involving diaphyeal region with adjacent soft tissue involvement.
