Presentation
Pain and swelling in the upper right arm. The patient was a building worker, who has been lifting heavy material the last days.
Patient Data
Evident superficial collateralization in the chest, shoulder and upper right limb.
Increased venous diameters of the right subclavian, axillary and brachial veins. There is a hypoechoic thrombus inside. With color Doppler, no vascular flow is detected within the veins. The arteries are patent.
Case Discussion
The patient had evident clinical signs of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the upper right limb veins, because of the numerous collateral veins seen in the chest and shoulder. The ultrasound confirmed acute DVT.
As in the last few days, the patient had been working in construction, lifting heavy supplies, Paget-Schrötter syndrome was suspected. Other causes and associations such as tumors have been excluded by CT.
