Paradoxical middle turbinate

Case contributed by Dr Sovann Vathana Lay

Convulsion and amnesia. Incidental finding.

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Female

Coronal reconstructed images in bone window shows an inverse curvature of the right middle turbinate. Notice a slight leftward deviation of nasal septum.

No complication i.e. sinusitis or osteomeatal complex obstruction evident.

Case Discussion

Patient was referred for brain CT scan for her convulsion and amnesia.

On coronal reconstructions, an outward bend of the right middle turbinate and a leftward nasal septum deviation were found. There were no clinical or radiological features of complication, e.g. sinusitis. Therefore, no management was planned for this finding.

Paradoxical middle turbinate is a developmental anomaly. If found solely and without associated radiological finding, it rarely produces any sinus complication hence no treatment is necessary.
