Case contributed by Shanesh Kumar
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Painful enlarging lump near the opening of the parotid duct. No symptoms or parotid duct obstruction and no significant past medical history.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male
ultrasound

Targeted ultrasound of the left cheek - demonstrating a hypoechoic lobulated nodule, with no abnormal vascularity. The location appears to be at the level of the expected ostium of the parotid duct.  Differentials include an inflammatory process and neoplastic process.

Case Discussion

A subsequent excisional biopsy was performed, which revealed alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. Staging scans did not reveal metastatic disease. The patient subsequently underwent further surgical excision and is currently undertaking adjuvant chemoradiotherapy.
