Parrot beak meniscal tear

Case contributed by Dr Roberto Schubert

Known osteoarthritis of the knee. Acute pain and effusion after minor trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 70
Gender: Male

MRI shows a tear in the mid-portion of the medial menicus with inferior displacement of a fragment between the capsule (menisco-tibial ligament) and the tibia. Preexisting high-grade chondropathy in the medial femoro-tibial and retropatellar compartments of the joint.

Case Discussion

The form of this meniscal tear on transverse sections ressembles the upper beak of a parrot when viewed from the side.
