Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return

Presentation

Recurrent admissions due to recurrent chest infections.

Patient Data

Age: 2 months
Gender: Female

Pneumonic consolidation is seen in the left lower lobe. Few other small consolidative patches are seen in the posterior aspects of the both lungs.

No vascular rings noted.

The left superior pulmonary vein is seen draining in the left bracheo-cephalic vein (innominate vein). 

Case Discussion

This anomaly here (left superior pulmonary vein anomaly) is thought to be the most common of the Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return, however, in this case, it is an incidental finding and not expected to be the cause of the recurrent chest infections.

Patients with this anomaly may be asymptomatic if there is no significant volume overload or cardiac manifestations.
