Patella alta - high riding patella

Persistent anterior knee pain since long time.

Patient Data

Age: 22 years.
Gender: Male
Modality: X-ray

The patella is seen higher in position (high riding).

Modality: MRI

Abnormally high position of the patella that is denoting high riding patella.

Abnormal patellar tendon L / greatest diagonal L of patella = 1.65 = suggesting patella alta. (ratio must not exceed 1.2). Evidence of retro and infrapatellar soft tissue edema pattern is seen.

Moderate amount of synovial joint effusion.

An annotated image to demonstarte Insall-Salvati ratio which is abnormal denoting high riding patella.

Case Discussion

The case is considered as idiopathic high riding patella as confirmed by Insall-Salvati ratio.
