Patella avulsion

Case contributed by Jeremy Jones

Presentation

Acute injury while playing football. Knee pain and limited weight-bearing.

Patient Data

Age: 10 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

On the lateral view, there is a linear radiodensity that overlies the anteroinferior aspect of the patella.

This could be an accessory ossification center, but the overlying soft-tissue swelling is more suggestive of an avulsion injury.

Case Discussion

Because of the additional soft-tissue swelling over the patella, the suggestion of an avulsion injury was made. The child was immobilized and recovered well.
