MRI of the knee demonstrates characteristic appearance of recent transient dislocation of the patella. There is bone marrow edema involving the medial side of the patella and lateral side of the femoral condyles with thickening and high signal seen in the medial retinaculum. In addition there is also a grade 1 strain of the medial collateral ligament and a large joint effusion.
This pattern represents dislocation and impaction of the patella against the femur when it is laterally dislocated.
