Pathogenesis of aortic intramural haematoma (diagram)

Case contributed by Dr Vincent Tatco

This stack of images shows the formation of an aortic intramural haematoma (IMH). Intramural haematoma begins with rupture of the vasa vasorum, which are blood vessels that supply the aortic wall. This results to bleeding and haematoma formation within the medial layer of the aortic wall.

Case Discussion

This diagram depicts the formation of an aortic intramural haematoma from spontaneous rupture of the vasa vasorum. Aortic intramural haematoma is one of the possible causes of an acute aortic syndrome.
