Pectoralis major muscle abscess

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Left anterior chest wall pain, swelling for 5-6 days.

Patient Data

Age: 30-35 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

There is an asymmetry in hemithorax translucency. Left hemithorax is more 'opaque' due to chest wall soft tissue swelling.  There is no air bronchogram. 

ultrasound

A lobulated collection in the sternal head of the pectoralis major muscle with floating echoes. Approximate size - 80 x 50 x 30 mm.

Edematous clavicular head and rest of the sternal head of the pectoralis major muscle.

Normal costal head of the muscle. Normal pectoralis major tendon. Normal pectoralis minor muscle.

Patent axillary vessels. Few adjacent subcentimeter-sized reactive nodes. Overlying subcutaneous fat edema without a collection.

Case Discussion

Findings favor chest wall abscess involving the sternal head of pectoralis major muscle.

Incision and drainage confirmed abscess.
