Presentation
A pediatric patient presented with abdominal pain and vomiting. There is a history of falling a heavy object over the abdomen.
Patient Data
Contrast-enhanced abdominal CT reveals a full-thickness laceration of the pancreatic body. The tail of the pancreas enhances heterogeneously. There is an anterior peripancreatic fluid collection was noted.
There is a left-sided minimal pleural effusion.
Findings are most suggestive of AAST (American Association for the Surgery of Trauma) grade III pancreatic injury.
Case Discussion
Pancreatic trauma in children is a rare entity. Therefore, both scientific knowledge and clinical experience regarding its management are limited. Conservative treatment is preferred in low-grade injuries (grade I-II), and surgical interventions may be indicated in more severe pancreatic injuries.
