Case Discussion
This case shows a pedunculated colonic polyp on double contrast barium enema.
Colon cancer follows an accepted adenoma/dysplasia --> carcinoma progression. Three types of adenomas are recognized in the colonic polyps:
tubular: (~80%)
villous: (~5-15%)
tubulovillous: (~5-15%) - 25-75% villous component
In this case, the polyp had tubulovillous histology. These polyps (and polyps >10 mm in size generally) are considered "advanced adenomas" and are at higher risk for developing colonic adenocarcinoma.
