Pellegrini-Stieda lesion

Case contributed by Dr Charlie Chia-Tsong Hsu

Patient present with medial knee pain and joint swelling. Patient denies recent history of knee trauma.

Patient Data

Gender: Male

Anteriorposterior (AP)  view of the knee shows linear ossification/calcification in the proximal medial collateral ligament (MCL). Lateral view demonstrate joint effusion in the supra-patella recess.

Pellegrini-Stieda lesion is thought to be the result of stripping of the femoral periosteum near the origin of the MCL which leads to heterotopic ossification and dystrophic calcification.
