Pellegrini-Stiedia lesion

Case contributed by Dr Ian Bickle

Young adult. Pain along medial aspect of knee for several months. Recalls previous football incident.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Male

Thin linear bone fragment paralleling the medial femoral condyle.

No joint effusion.

No soft tissue calcification.

Case Discussion

The appearances are classical of a Pellegrini-Stieda lesion.  The ossified fragment is adjacent to the margin of the medial femoral condyle at the site of the medial collateral ligament and is thought to be due to an avulsion injury.
