Pelvic gossypiboma

Patient has history of transabdominal hysterectomy and right salpingo-oophorectomy 1 month prior, presented with lower abdominal pain and tenderness.

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female

Radio-opaque convoluted curvilinear structure with air foci in pelvis.


Echogenic mass with posterior acoustic shadowing in pelvis.


Pelvic collection containing air foci and a curvilinear metallic density structure.

Case Discussion

Patient presented to emergency department with lower abdominal pain for which abdominal ultrasound was carried out. The lesion was mistaken for a calcified mass in the residual ovary. Further history taking, x-ray and subsequent CT scan revealed a gossypiboma with air foci and a radio-opaque marker within the retained surgical mop.
