Pelvic radiograph in third trimester

Case contributed by Frank Gaillard
Diagnosis not applicable

Presentation

Motor vehicle accident. Left pelvis pain.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Female

Fetus noted with head in pelvic brim (?engaged). Apparent widening of the pubis symphysis most likely relates to ligamentous laxity of pregnancy. No fractures identified.

Case Discussion

The decision to perform the x-ray was made hoping it would be normal and thus make a CT unnecessary. Treating pregnant patients is always challenging as high radiation studies should be avoided if possible.
