Penetrating atherosclerotic ulcer with intramural hematoma (illustration)

Case contributed by Vincent Tatco
Diagnosis not applicable

This illustrates a penetrating atherosclerotic ulcer (PAU) with associated intramural hematoma (IMH) in the descending aorta.

Case Discussion

Penetrating atherosclerotic ulcers form when atheromatous plaques erode. The resulting ulcer penetrates the intima, progresses into the media and may result to intramural hematoma formation. Accompanying noncalcified and calcified atheromatous plaques result to irregular or undulating surface along the aortic lumen wall.
