Percutaneous nephrostomy diagram

Case contributed by Dr Omar Bashir

The diagram illustrates key steps in nephrostomy.

  1. Puncture of a calyx (usually lower pole) using a hollow needle.
  2. Insertion of a guidewire through the needle after confirming the needle tip location with contrast.
  3. Insertion of a pigtail drain within the renal pelvis.
