Pericardial drain on CXR

Case contributed by Dr Craig Hacking

Post drain insertion for pericardial effusion.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Male

Enlarged heart with a pigtail pericardial drainage catheter on the left side.

Case Discussion

Nice example of the position of a pigtail pericardial drainage catheter following percutaneous insertion.

Surgically placed drains (e.g. post CABG or valve replacement) tend to be larger bore straight catheters.
