Pericardial fat pads

Case contributed by Dr Bruno Di Muzio

Incidental finding on chest X-rays.

Patient Data

Age: 70-year-old
Gender: Male

Chest X-rays

No consolidation. Faintly dense opacity in the right and left heart borders, better appreciated anteriorly on the lateral radiograph.

Case Discussion

Epicardial or pericardial fat pads are normal structures that lie in the cardiophrenic, more so on the right. They can cause confusion when only a frontal X-ray is assessed.

This diagnosis was based on the radiograph appearance and comparison with old previous images showing stability.
