Presentation

The patient presented with a long history of posteromedial left thigh swelling with recent discomfort.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

Large well-defined soft tissue density mass in the thigh. No calcification within it or bony change.

Case Discussion

Pathology report:

These are small fragments of a spindle cell neoplasm with focally clear cytoplasm, no significant nuclear atypia, no mitotic activity, and no evidence of necrosis in this small sample. There are small hyalinized blood vessels.

Immunocytochemical studies show tumor cells are diffusely positive for S100, SOX10 and vimentin, and are negative for pan-CK (AE1/AE3), neurofilament, desmin and actin. Ki67 / MIB-1 proliferative index is very low (approximately 1%).

DIAGNOSIS: left thigh, biopsy: peripheral nerve tumor. This is a benign peripheral nerve tumor with features favoring schwannoma.
