Peritonsillar abscess

Presentation

Fever, and dysphagia in a patient with a history of recurrent tonsillitis.

Patient Data

Age: 18 years
Gender: Male

The CT images demonstrate a hypodense fluid collection with peripheral enhancement within the right tonsilar region, extending to the ipsilateral parapharyngeal, and submandibular spaces as well as the retropharyngeal space.  Bilateral reactive lymph nodes are noted.

Case Discussion

CT features are consistent with a peritonsillar abscess. The retropharyngeal extension is considered as one of the complications.
