Persistent metopic suture with frontal sinus agensis

Case contributed by Ammar Ashraf
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Headache, loss of consciousness and seizures. CT brain to rule out space occupying lesion.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Female

No acute intracranial pathology or space occupying lesion is seen. Incidental finding of persistent metopic suture with frontal sinus agenesis; the remaining visualized paranasal sinuses as well as bilateral mastoid air cells are well-aerated and clear.

Case Discussion

Metopic suture, commonly obliterated by the age of 7 years can persist as an anatomical variant and is of little clinical significance except in cases of trauma where it can be misinterpreted as a frontal bone fracture. It may be associated with frontal sinus agenesis (as in this case) or hypoplasia.
