Persistent sciatic artery

Presentation

Vague recurrent lower abdominal pain.

Age: 16 years
Gender: Female

No acute abdominal pathology was identified. 

Visualized portions of bilateral proximal superficial femoral arteries were small in caliber with persistence of internal iliac arteries through greater sciatic notches into the upper bilateral posterior thighs. These features are consistent with bilateral persistent sciatic arteries.

Case Discussion

Persistent sciatic artery is a rare vascular anomaly resulting in persistence of primitive axis artery of the lower limb. It can be unilateral or bilateral. It is prone to early atherosclerotic changes and aneurysm formation.
