Persistent ulnar styloid ossicle

Case contributed by Mohammad Osama Hussein Yonso
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

The patient accidentally slipped and fell from the car. Now pain, tenderness and mild swelling over the left wrist and 5th metacarpal bone, no open injury or deformity. No history of an old fracture in the left wrist.

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

There is a well corticated, unfused ossicle with smooth margins noted at the usual location of the ulnar styloid process, which is representative of a persistent ulnar styloid ossicle.

Case Discussion

An incidentally noted persistent ulnar styloid ossicle on a patient receiving an x-ray due to trauma to the wrist. The absence of any wrist trauma in the history suggests that this is a normal variant in this case and it should not be diagnosed as the ulnar styloid process fracture by mistake.
