pH probe

Case contributed by Dr Aneta Kecler - Pietrzyk

Presentation

2-year-old girl with a history of reflux.

Patient Data

Age: 2 years
Gender: Female
X-ray

pH probe with tip in distal oesophagus.

Normal mediastinal and cardiac contours. Lungs are clear.

Case Discussion

Probes measuring oesophageal pH as part of a gastroesophageal reflux workup are not frequently seen on paediatric chest radiographs.

The tip of the probe should be seen in the distal oesophagus (above the gastroesophageal junction).
It is important not to confuse it with a feeding tube.

The probe is connected to a monitor that records acid levels over a 24-hour period.
