Pharyngeal abscess

Presentation

Short onset dysphagia and fever.

Patient Data

Age: 75 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

Poor dentition.

Extensive soft tissue widening in the prevertebral space.  No radio-opaque foreign body.  No surgical emphysema.

Degenerative change in the lower cervical spine.  No bony erosion.

Case Discussion

The pre vertebral soft are markedly widened.   

This patient had a proven pharyngeal abscess.

Blebs of air and foreign bodies may accompany such findings or in cases of sponylodiscitis bony destruction may be evident.
