Trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male
CT

Comminuted intra-articular fracture of the medial malleolus extends to the articular surface. Small displaced bone fragment is seen within the tibiotalar joint. Findings consistent with type B tibial plafond fractures.

Case Discussion

Pilon fracture or tibial plafond fractures are classified into three subtypes:

  • type A: intact articular surface, metaphyseal fractures, the shaft may be involved
  • type B: partially involved articular surface, partial metaphyseal fractures, the shaft may be involved
  • type C: involved articular surface, metaphyseal fractures, the shaft may be involved
