Pineal cyst - small

Case contributed by A.Prof Frank Gaillard

Presentation

Incidental finding. Otherwise well.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Female
MRI

A small rounded pineal cyst is present with no mass effect upon the adjacent tectal plate. No solid component or suspicious features.

Case Discussion

Small cystic spaces within the pineal gland are normal. So are small pineal cysts which unless large (e.g. <1 cm) or unusual in appearance can be safely ignored. If larger or with atypical features, followup may be prudent to ensure that they do not represent a cystic pineocytoma.
