Placental chorioangioma

Case contributed by Aneesh Km
Diagnosis probable

Presentation

Routine first-trimester antenatal scanning of an 11 to12 weeks gestation.

Patient Data

Gender: Female
ultrasound

A well circumscribed hypoechoic mass at the fetal surface of the placenta, adjacent to the cord insertion, bulging into the amniotic cavity. The mass has internal vascularity and adjacent feeding vessels.

Case Discussion

Possibility of chorioangioma of placenta was considered. An important differential is intramural/submucosal fibroid, however intraplacental location and internal vascularity with feeding vessel, favor the diagnosis of chorioangioma.

Chorioangioma is the most common benign placental tumor and frequent incidental finding in antenatal scans. Follow-up monitoring for size, development of polyhydramnios or even hydrops fetalis.
