Plantar fibromatosis

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Right plantar foot pain over several years, with a small palpable lump.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound
  • multiple discrete fusiform thickenings/lesions of the plantar fascia located distant from the calcaneal insertion, the largest measuring 11 x 5 mm

  • no increased vascular flow is demonstrated in relation to these thickenings

  • plantar fascia measures 3.7 mm away from the thickenings/lesions

Case Discussion

Ultrasound findings in this case are characteristic of plantar fibromatosis, also known as Ledderhose disease.

The patient was managed conservatively in this case, but surgical excision may be considered if the lesions are painful and disabling.
