Plasma cell mastitis and left breast cancer

Presentation

Left breast lump of few months duration.

Patient Data

Age: 85 years
Gender: Female

Bilateral breasts thick, linear, rod-like and cigar-shaped macro-calcifications. Calcifications are bilaterally symmetrical in distribution and oriented with long axes pointing toward the nipple.

Left breast LIQ irregular spiculated high-density mass corresponding by the US (not shown) to an irregular non-parallel hypoechoic mass at 8-9 o'clock position measuring 2.2 X 1.6 cm.

Case Discussion

Mammographic findings of bilateral breasts symmetrical thick, linear, rod-like and cigar-shaped macro-calcifications with long axes oriented pointing toward the nipple is pathognomic of plasma cell mastitis.

Plasma cell mastitis is a benign breast condition representing calcification of inspissated secretions in or immediately adjacent to ectatic benign ducts. It is typically seen in older women above 60 years of age.

Left breast LIQ spiculated mass highly suggestive of malignancy (BI-RADS 5). An ultrasound-guided biopsy was done revealing breast cancer (invasive duct carcinoma grade II).
