Pleomorphic adenoma - parapharyngeal

Case contributed by Matt A. Morgan
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Dysphagia and dyspnea. Further workup discovered a pharyngeal mass and a CT of the neck was ordered.

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Male

There is a 5 cm right parapharyngeal mass that is hypoattenuating on the noncontrast series and shows mild heterogeneous enhancement after the administration of contrast.

Case Discussion

The parotid gland has a deep lobe and this can sometimes be forgotten when evaluating and developing a differential for a parapharyngeal mass. Biopsy of this mass revealed pleomorphic adenoma.
