Pleomorphic adenoma - parotid gland

Presentation

History of two years left parotid mass, not increasing in size.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

A well circumscribed, ovoid and hypo-echoic, posteriorly enhancing soft solid lesion measuring 3.5 x 3.7 x 3.23 cm (22 cc) is noted squarely seated within the left medial parotid gland parenchyma. The lesion is hypovascular on color flow mapping but with subtly bosselated surface contour albeit with no invasion into extra-parotid gland areas. The left Stensen's duct is not obstructed and no gross lymphadenopathy bilaterally.

Cytology result

Pre-auricular mass.

Microscopy: Cytology shows aspirate with scanty epithelial and stromal cells. There is abundant chondromyxoid material.

Diagnosis: Features of pleomorphic adenoma of salivary glands.

Case Discussion

A left parotid gland lesion cytologically confirmed as a pleomorphic adenoma of salivary glands. No sonographic features of intra-tumoral calcific, cystic or hypervascular metamorphosis.
