Pleural empyema

Presentation

Cough and fever.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Left sided biconvex pleural collection along the lateral chest wall. The obtuse angle with the chest wall indicates this arising from the pleural space.   

Heart size normal.  Right lung clear.

Case Discussion

This is a classical appearance of a pleural empyema.

The obtuse angle with the chest wall and the biconcave shape are typical.  The right pleural space is completely normal.

Percutaneous drain insertion was undertaken which confirmed a pleural empyema.
