Presentation
Chronic non-specific abdominal pain.
Patient Data
Multiple intramural air bubbles are seen in the wall of splenic flexure and proximal of descending colon, better seen on lung window. No intraperitoneal free air is noted.
The prostate gland is mildly enlarged.
Degenerative changes such as osteophytosis are seen in the lumbar spine.
Grade I spondylolisthesis of L5 on S1 is present.
Case Discussion
Pneumatosis coli refers to intramural gas limited to the colonic wall. In adults, it can have both benign and life-threatening causes and may need more evaluation regarding the patient's history and symptoms.
This case demonstrates intramural gas bubbles limited to the colonic wall, which is compatible with pneumatosis cystoides coli, a rare, idiopathic, and usually benign condition.
