Case contributed by Dr Ian Bickle

Previous pneumonectomy for lung cancer.

Patient Data

Age: 68
Gender: Male

Total opacification of the left hemithorax with the trachea pulled towards the left.

Right lung clear.

Case Discussion

The causes of a complete white out are relatively limited:

  • Pneumonectomy
  • Total consolidation
  • Massive pleural effusion

The position of the trachea is often key to the cause.  If pulled to the side of opacification it is usually due to a prior pneumonectomy.
