Presentation

Previous pneumonectomy for lung cancer.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Total opacification of the left hemithorax with the trachea pulled towards the left.

Pacemaker.

Right lung clear.

Case Discussion

The causes of a complete white out are relatively limited:

  • pneumonectomy
  • total consolidation
  • massive pleural effusion

The position of the trachea is often key to the cause.  If pulled to the side of opacification it is usually due to a prior pneumonectomy.
