Pneumopericardium

Presentation

Excessive coughing. Chest pain, decreased air entry left lung. ?pneumothorax

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Small pneumopericardium. No pneumothorax or surgical emphysema.  The lungs are clear. Normal bones, no displaced fracture. 

Case Discussion

A pneumopericardium has multiple causes, which should be assessed for once demonstrated on chest radiograph.  Clinical history will help guide interpretation, and a history of penetrating trauma necessitates the need for cross-sectional imaging if not already performed.
