Pneumothorax - large with shift

Presentation

Young male increasing short of breath over past 2 hours. No history of trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 26
Gender: Male
x-ray

Radiolucent right hemithorax.  Enlarged right thoracic cavity.

Collapse of right lung centrally.

Shift of the heart and mediastinum to the left.

Case Discussion

Large pneumothorax, with mild mediastinal shift.

This is a medical emergency.  A small proportion of pneumothoraces will be large enough to result in mediastinal shift ( i.e under tension ).
