Pneumothorax on shoulder series

Case contributed by Dr Henry Knipe

Fall with right scapular pain.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Male

Right pneumothorax. Right 5th and 6th rib fractures. No shoulder girdle fracture. No dislocation.

Right hydropneumothorax, presumably haemopneumothorax given right fifth and sixth rib fractures. No evidence of tension.

Case Discussion

The teaching point is to always look at the lungs on shoulder x-rays as shoulder pain is non-specific and can come from many sources.
