Pontine haemorrhage

Case contributed by Dr Chris O'Donnell

Sudden collapse and respiratory arrest. Intubated.

Patient Data

Age: 65
Gender: Male

Very large intra-parenchymal haematoma involving and expanding the pons with marked mass effect

Case Discussion

This is a typical site for hypertension-associated cerebral haemorrhage although it is rarely seen on antemortem CT scanning as it is usually an acutely fatal condition.  Differential diagnosis would include bleeding into a vascular malformation such as a cavernous haemangioma.
