Pony tail causing artefact

Case contributed by Dr Craig Hacking

Presentation

Incidental finding on frontal skull X-ray.

Patient Data

Age: 35-40 years
Gender: Female
X-ray

Large round peripherally dense (? calcified) opacity projected in the centre of the skull above the orbits.

Case Discussion

The round opacity over the centre of the skull was not apparent on any other view (not provided). The opacity was confirmed by the radiographer as the patient's pony tail and with the patient's hair let down, a repeat X-ray showed resolution of the opacity.

If not due to artefact, the DDx would be of a calcified meningioma.
